Caribbean & Central America - September 2021

Introduction

The dismissal of Juan Francisco Sandoval, the head of the attorney general’s (AG) special unit against corruption (Feci) in Guatemala, has sparked major outrage. Internationally lauded for his anti-corruption efforts, Sandoval, who has since fled the country, was fired on 23 July by the head of the AG, María Consuelo Porras, purportedly for frequent abuses and undermining her work. His removal, which also prompted some uncomfortable questions for President Alejandro Giammattei amid claims that Sandoval had information that he had allegedly received bribes from Russians, has unleashed major protests as well as international condemnation. The first piece in this September edition of the Latin American Regional Report: Caribbean & Central America looks at the furore surrounding Sandoval’s departure.
