In brief: Brazil’s coffee harvest to fall by a quarter

* The Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento (Conab), the logistics arm of Brazil’s agriculture ministry (Mapa), has released new figures showing that the 2021 coffee harvest is expected to be 25.7% smaller than the 2020 harvest, which gave record yields. Brazil is expected to produce 49.6m sacks of coffee this harvest year (one sack = 60 kg), of which 30.7m sacks are expected to be of Arabica coffee, down 36.9% on the previous harvest. This year was always expected to produce a lower yield, as coffee is cultivated according to a biennial harvest cycle, wherein a strong production year is necessarily followed by a year of lower yield harvest; however, a drought and frosts have further driven down this year’s expected yield. Minas Gerais, a major coffee producing state that was hit by frosts in July, is expected to see its 2021 harvest fall by 38.1% to 21.4m sacks.
