In brief: Argentina lifts cap on beef exports to China

* Argentina's agriculture, cattle & fishing minister Julián Domínguez has confirmed that as of 4 October, Argentina’s cattle farmers would be allowed to freely export beef to China. This removes a 50% cap imposed earlier this year as part of efforts to reduce rising prices domestically, which had proved a source of tensions with cattle farmers. Domínguez made the announcement following a meeting with leaders of four main agricultural associations: Federación Agraria Argentina (FAA), Confederación Intercooperativa Agropecuaria (Coninagro), Sociedad Rural Argentina (SRA) and Confederaciones Rurales Argentinas (CRA). According to the government, Argentina exported a record 903,197 tonnes of beef in 2020 while China remains its chief beef market, accounting for some 75% of Argentina’s beef exports.
