BRAZIL: New law defines crimes against democracy

Brazil’s federal congress revoked a controversial piece of legislation known as the Lei de Segurança Nacional (LSN), or national security law, on 10 August. A few weeks later, President Jair Bolsonaro sanctioned the law that replaces it, the Lei de Defesa do Estado Democrático de Direito (law for the defence of the democratic rule of law), which provides a new framework for prosecuting crimes against democratic institutions and, it is hoped, better protects freedom of speech.
