BRAZIL: ‘Novo cangaço’ in São Paulo

In late August, the city of Araçatuba in the west of São Paulo state was momentarily paralysed by a violent raid on several banks. The gang carrying out the robberies exchanged fired with the police, took hostages, and left explosives lying around the city; three people died and five more were injured. The sheer violence of the attack shocked Brazil and captured public attention, but the raid in Araçatuba is not an isolated incident.
