* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest unemployment figures, which show that the unemployment rate has fallen to 13.7% in the rolling quarter ending in July. This is one percentage point below the record 14.7% unemployment rate the country saw in the rolling quarter ending in April, and just below the 13.8% unemployment rate recorded in May-July 2020. The fall in the unemployment rate is due to an increase in the employed population: the employment rate stood at 50.2% in the rolling quarter ending in July, meaning that over half of the working age population has a job, the first time that this threshold has been reached since April 2020. However, with more people joining the workforce as the country emerges from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and concomitant economic crisis, unemployment continues to affect a high number of Brazilians in absolute figures: 14.1m Brazilians were unemployed in the May-July rolling quarter, down from 14.8m in February-April but up from 13.1m in May-July 2020.
