In brief: Argentina’s urban poverty rate decreases slightly

* Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released its latest report on urban poverty and destitution, which shows that the poverty rate in the first six months of 2021 had fallen by 0.3 percentage points year-on-year. According to Indec’s survey of 31 urban areas, 40.6% of the surveyed population lived in poverty in January-June this year (equivalent to 11.7m people), down from 40.9% in the first half of 2020 and 42% in the second half of last year, when the economic impacts of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic were most harshly felt. However, destitution is on the rise: 10.7% of those surveyed lived in destitution (with an average household income of Ar$16,741 [US$169.6] per month), up from 10.5% in both the first and second half of 2020. This is equivalent to 3.1m people currently living in destitution.
