In brief: Dominican tourism minister hails sector’s recovery

* The Dominican Republic’s tourism minister, David Collado, has said that a total of 365,544 tourists visited the country in September – the highest figure for the month of September in the country’s history. He said this was the latest sign of recovery of the sector which was badly damaged by the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Collado said the September 2021 figure was a 25% improvement on the figure registered in the same month in 2020 and a 14% improvement on September 2019. He said that of the 3.3m tourists who had visited the country so far in 2021, 79% were foreign and 21% were of Dominican origin. He also said that in September the DR had received 3,964 commercial flights via 87 airlines coming from 90 different airports and 43 countries. He said that 71% of these flights were occupied and air ticket reservations for October-December 2021 were 12%-20% higher than those made in 2019. He also said that the government was forecasting that 4.8m tourists could visit the country in 2021.
