In brief: Brazil’s economic activity shrinks in August

* Brazil’s central bank (BCB) has released the latest figures for the monthly index of economic activity (IBC-Br), which show that economic activity shrank 0.15% in August compared with the previous month. In the 12 months to August, the IBC-Br – which serves as a proxy of GDP – grew 3.99%. Brazil’s economy contracted 4.1% in 2020, and is expected to recover and grow by around 5% this year.
