In brief: Strong performance for Uruguay’s meat exports

* Uruguayan daily El Observador has published new figures on Uruguay’s meat export market, based on data from the Instituto Nacional de Carnes (Inac), which show that the export of meat is surging amid higher prices. Uruguay’s meat exports have generated US$2.17bn in income in the year 2021 so far (up until 16 October), a 53.7% increase on the value of meat exports over the same period a year earlier. Meanwhile the volume of exports has increased 36.3% to 528,586 tonnes (t). Compared with 2019, before the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic struck and disrupted the global economy, the value of Uruguay’s meat exports has increased by 21.5%. China is the primary destination for Uruguayan meat, receiving 57% of exports, followed by the European Union (EU), with 13%. China receives 62% of Uruguay’s beef exports. Growing demand from China is helping sustain Uruguay’s meat exports – beef exports to China have grown 64.1% in 2021 so far compared with the same period in 2020, while overall meat exports to China have surged 92.7%.
