In brief: Chilean low-cost airline expands to Uruguay

* JetSmart, a low-cost airline headquartered in Chile, has announced that it will start running thrice-weekly flights between the Chilean capital Santiago and the Uruguayan capital Montevideo from 18 January 2022. JetSmart’s commercial director, Darío Ratinoff, has stressed that the new Santiago-Montevideo route will be operated with brand new Airbus 320 aircraft. Diego Arrosa, the CEO of Corporación América Uruguay, the company which operates Montevideo’s Carrasco airport, has hailed the launch of this route as important, particularly given how long Uruguay’s borders have remained closed to tourists due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. “For more than four years we have been trying to persuade and convince JetSmart to land in Uruguay,” Arrosa said, adding that Uruguay has the potential to become a “hub”. Uruguay’s Tourism Minister Tabaré Viera said the arrival of the new airline was “very good news,” noting that aerial connectivity is an important element for the post-pandemic recovery of the tourism industry. According to Viera, tourist arrivals from Chile had increased 5% in 2019, before the pandemic struck. Uruguay is reopening its borders to vaccinated tourists from 1 November.
