PANAMA: Surge in homicides sparks concerns

Panama’s forensic institute (IMELCF) has warned that the Ancón morgue, which serves Panama City and metropolitan area, is at “maximum capacity” due to the rise in criminality in the country. Earlier this week the US embassy in Panama City issued a statement condemning the “violent homicide” of a US businessman while last week at least five people were killed following a nightclub shooting in the capital which national police (PNP) chief John Dornheim attributed to clashes between gangs. These developments have subjected President Laurentino Cortizo and his government to renewed criticism with regard to combating criminality.
