PERU: Castillo’s rift with PL adds to uncertainty around new cabinet

Peru’s congress granted a confidence vote to President Pedro Castillo’s new cabinet on 4 November, but the bad blood between the head of state and the far-left Perú Libre (PL) that he rode to power was clear to see. With Castillo having purged the government of most of its PL ministers last month, the party flexed its muscles in retaliation, failing to thwart the approval of the new cabinet but making clear its capacity to cause problems for Castillo. On top of the lockstep opposition that Castillo still faces from the second-largest party in congress, the right-wing Fuerza Popular (FP, Fujimoristas), he now risks losing the support of PL, the largest party in the legislature. The key question now is whether Castillo attempts to win that support back with policies reflecting his far-left campaign promises, or pivots to the centre to woo congress’s more moderate legislators.
