CHILE: Two-one for Vamos Chile

Three key congressional votes were held this week with the government winning two of them – but it still looks like a pyrrhic victory. The government’s two victories were to prolong the state of emergency in the south of the country, where there is an ongoing conflict involving demands for autonomy and the return of ancestral lands by militant members of the Mapuche indigenous community, and to reject a proposed bill permitting a fourth 10% withdrawal of funds from the privatised pension system. The big defeat was that after a marathon session lasting 22 hours, the lower chamber of congress voted to impeach President Sebastián Piñera. The impeachment case now goes to the senate.
