Brazil & Southern Cone - November 2021

Introduction

This November edition of the Latin American Regional Report: Brazil & Southern Cone was written as two of the sub-region’s countries were preparing for elections: Argentina held congressional mid-terms on 14 November, and the first round of presidential elections are due in Chile on 21 November. The report begins by looking at the state of Argentina’s ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The government led by President Alberto Fernández’s economic policy was hazy in the run-up to the elections, which as expected delivered a punishment vote for the ruling Frente de Todos coalition, which is in turn likely to impact IMF negotiations going forward.
