* The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has published a report on food insecurity in Latin America and the Caribbean, which revealed that Central American and Caribbean countries suffered the highest rates of malnutrition in 2020. Four of the five worst affected countries were in this subregion, with Haiti seeing the highest prevalence of malnutrition (46.8% of the population), Nicaragua the third highest (19.3%), Guatemala the fourth highest (16.8%), and then Honduras (13.5%). Venezuela was the second-worst affected country in the region, with 27.4% of its population suffering from hunger. The average malnutrition rate for Latin America and the Caribbean as a whole was 9.1% in 2020, compared to 7.1% in 2019, with the FAO attributing the rise in hunger to the economic effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
