PERU: Opposition moves to impeach Castillo

Three right-wing opposition parties presented a motion of impeachment against Peru’s President Pedro Castillo on 25 November, after gaining enough signatures to make the motion eligible for debate in Peru’s congress. For now, Castillo does not appear to be in immediate danger – 52 votes would be needed to trigger an impeachment trial, and 87 deputies would then need to vote against the president in order to remove him from office. That currently seems unlikely. However, the 29 November announcement of preliminary investigations into Castillo by the comptroller general and attorney general’s office into alleged backroom deals over infrastructure projects may incite further legislative rebellion.
