In brief: Nicaragua’s trade deficit widens

* Nicaragua’s central bank (BCN) has released the latest figures on the balance of trade, which show that the country’s trade deficit reached US$468.3m in Q3 2021 – a 356% increase on the same quarter in 2020. Exports in Q3 totalled US$1.73bn (+23.9% year-on-year), while imports totalled 2.20bn (+46.5%). The BCN attributed the dramatic increase in the trade deficit to increased consumer spending driving up imports as Nicaragua’s economy recovers from the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
