In brief: Bolivia opens research centre on lithium industrialisation

* Bolivia’s President Luis Arce has inaugurated the Centro de Investigación en Ciencia y Tecnología de Materiales y Recursos Evaporíticos – a research centre which the government says will accelerate the industrialisation of lithium extraction in Bolivia. The US$14.3m facility in Yocalla municipality, Potosí department, will primarily “develop Bolivian capacity in science and technology for the extraction and industrialisation of our lithium”, Arce said. The minister for hydrocarbons and energy, Franklin Molina, said that the research centre will also increase the country’s capacity to manufacture lithium batteries. Molina added that the facility’s launch will accelerate “not only science and technology, but also skills and opportunities that will lead to more sources of employment and more technically qualified people in the future”.
