In brief: Uruguay’s INE claims poverty progress

* Uruguay’s national statistics institute (INE) has released new figures which show that in the first half of 2021, the poverty rate in Uruguay fell to 10.2% of the population, down from 11.6% in 2020. The same figures show that 0.2% of the population were living in extreme poverty in the first half of 2021. While the INE figures reflect an improvement in the overall poverty rate, inequalities along racial/ethnic lines persist; the new figures show 19.2% of the afro/black population were living in poverty compared with 9.0% of the population described as white.
