NICARAGUA: Ditching Taiwan for China

Nicaragua has become the fifth country in Central America, formerly a bastion of support for Taiwan, to break off ties with Taipei and embrace Beijing. Following in the footsteps of Costa Rica, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, and Panama, the decision by the government led by President Daniel Ortega, which was ill-received by the US, was hardly a surprise. Nicaragua’s mounting isolation on the international stage and deteriorating ties with Washington, following the widely slammed 7 November general election which produced a re-election victory for Ortega [WR-21-45], has left it on the look-out for new benefactors and allies.
