* Panama’s national statistics institute (INEC) has released new figures which show that the country’s GDP grew 25.5% in the third quarter of 2021 compared with the same period in 2020. According to INEC, this reflects the reactivation of the economy following the elimination of heath measures imposed in response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic which caused Panama’s GDP to contract by 17.9% in 2020 – the highest contraction in Central America. Sectors which registered particularly high growth in the third quarter of 2021 included: mining and quarrying (131.2% year-on-year); construction (101.5%); other community, social & personal services (169.4%); and hotels & restaurants (96.9%). Meanwhile, the fishing sector contracted by 26.1%, and financial intermediation by 1.6%.
