In brief: Argentina’s ENRE fines electricity distributors

*Argentina’s electricity regulator Ente Nacional Regulador de la Electricidad (ENRE) has fined private electricity distributor Edesur Ar$400m (US$3.83m) in response to prolonged blackouts which took place in the tail end of December and start of this month. The amount is to be paid out in compensation to users affected. ENRE sanctioned Edesur for “deficient quality of attention and service offered to users” citing the “magnitude and persistence at the time of the blackouts”. The announcement came the day after ENRE fined another private electricity distributor Edenor Ar$20m in relation to outages which affected 2.3m users on 11, 14 and 15 January. The blackouts follow a recent heat wave that saw temperatures exceed 40°C which produced a surge in demand for energy for air conditioning.
