PERU | Las Bambas back in action. Operations resumed at the Las Bambas copper mine in Peru’s Apurímac region on 30 December, after being suspended for nearly two weeks in response to protests that blocked access roads to the mine. MMG, the Chinese company that holds a majority stake in Las Bambas, issued a statement announcing that roadblocks had been lifted in Chumbivilcas province (Cusco region) – some 200km from the mine – following negotiations brokered by Prime Minister Mirtha Vásquez. Those negotiations saw MMG agree to include Chumbivilcas in its area of social and environmental responsibility, and the government pledge to pave and maintain the access road running through the province, where severe dust pollution has been a major factor in the protests. Negotiations will resume on 18 January to address residents’ other main demand of increased employment opportunities in the mine’s operations.
