GUATEMALA: Marking a key anniversary
Guatemala recently marked the 25th anniversary of the signing of the peace accords which ended one of the longest armed conflicts in Latin America’s history (1960-1996), in which some 250,000 civilians were killed or disappeared. Human rights ombudsman Jordán Rodas and US-based lobby group Washington Office on Latin America (Wola) are among those warning of serious steps backwards under the government led by President Alejandro Giammattei, and of a dismantling of institutions put into place to ensure the implementation of the peace accords’ recommendations. Yet Wola also highlights that against all the odds, various high-profile transitional justice cases are making their way through the country’s courts.
