New ‘Remain in Mexico’ raises old concerns
The migrant protection protocol (MPP) is already making its impact known in northern Mexico, despite only being in force since December. According to US-based human rightsS lobby group Washington Office on Latin America (Wola), as of 10 January - just over a month since the programme’s controversial restart – the MPP, also known as the 'Remain in Mexico' programme, had sent 249 asylum-seeking migrants back to Mexico. As the programme gets underway, the limitations of new measures aimed at addressing humanitarian flaws are already beginning to show.
