Chile’s President-elect Gabriel Boric won a convincing victory over his far-right rival, José Antonio Kast, in the presidential run-off in December. But the left-winger, who at the age of 36 will be Chile’s youngest ever head of state, will take over the helm of a divided country when he is sworn in on 11 March. One of the many policy areas which will represent a challenge for the young president is that of public security – not just the implementation of a public security programme which may not resonate with large parts of the population and congress, but also how he will respond to specific issues, such as the Mapuche conflict in the Araucanía region and the ongoing fallout from the human rights violations committed during the October 2019 street protests.
