* Brazil’s agriculture minister, Tereza Cristina da Costa Dias, has issued reassurances regarding the country’s supply of fertilisers, amid concerns that the war between Russia and Ukraine will affect supply globally, and Brazil’s imports specifically. Da Costa Dias told journalists that Brazil has enough stock to last until October and that the country is working to find other partners to source fertilisers, a key product for Brazil’s agricultural sector. She is due to visit Canada on 12 March to negotiate potassium imports. Added to this, a ‘national fertiliser plan’, under elaboration since last year, is due to be launched shortly. “Brazil must treat this issue as a question of national security and food security”, Da Costa Dias said, explaining that this plan – which was created before the Russia-Ukraine war – aims to get Brazil producing 50% to 60% of its fertiliser needs. Currently, Brazil is the world’s largest importer of fertiliser (and fourth largest consumer of the product) – 80% of fertiliser used in Brazil is imported, a figure that rises for 95% in the case of potassium. Russia accounts for around 25% of Brazil’s fertiliser imports.
