URUGUAY: Tensions rise ahead of key referendum

On 24 March Uruguay’s former president José Mujica (2010-2015) accused the present incumbent, Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou, of straying outside the country’s “democratic traditions” after he came out in defence of the government’s flagship Ley de Urgente Consideración (LUC), the integrity of which is at stake in a referendum on 27 March.
