Forced internal displacement surges
Mexico is in the midst of a migration crisis. Record numbers of foreign migrants travelled to Mexico to settle or make the journey north last year. However, they are just one part of Mexico’s migration story. The number of Mexicans becoming migrants in their own country shot up last year too. Over 40,000 Mexicans were forced to move town, municipality or state in 2021, with the majority fleeing violence caused by drug trafficking organisations (DTOs). On 1 March, the national collective of victims of forced displacement, a grouping of rights organisations, NGOs and people affected by displacement, urged the federal senate to approve legislation to address the issue and guarantee the rights of the thousands of internally displaced Mexicans.
