Deadly army raid in Putumayo revives ‘false positives’ scandal

A military operation in Colombia’s southern department of Putumayo has drawn parallels with so-called ‘false positive’ cases of years gone by, in which slain civilians were passed off as felled guerrillas. President Iván Duque initially heralded the 28 March operation as a success, praising the “neutralisation” of 11 supposed members of the dissident 48th Front of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group. However, it quickly transpired that at least four of those killed were civilians, and subsequent media investigations have found indications of a cover-up.
