In brief: Cuba’s sugar industry in crisis

* Cuba’s sugar industry is in a state of crisis as the state-owned sugar company Azcuba will fall short of production targets agreed with international importers. In a press conference on 15 June circulated by local media, Dionis Pérez, head of communications for Azcuba, announced the failings without providing any concrete data. Pérez blamed poor harvests on a shortage of fuel and fertiliser, the poor condition of machinery in processing plants, and rainfall patterns. He also pointed the finger at the economic embargo placed on Cuba by the US as a contributing factor. In a separate set of comments made last month and reported by Granma, the official Communist Party mouthpiece, Pérez announced that the 2021-2022 sugar harvest amounted to just 52% of forecast production. However, despite the crisis, Pérez has repeatedly guaranteed that Cuban families will continue to receive their monthly allowance of 2.5kg of sugar, part of the ration plan in place since 1962.
