Air quality raises alarms in Valle de México

From 2 to 4 May, authorities told residents of Valle de México area (comprising Mexico City [CDMX] and surrounding areas in the Estado de México) to refrain from using their cars or participating in outdoor activities. This was due to dangerously high levels of ozone in the air. The restrictions were part of an environmental contingency plan drawn up by the Comisión Ambiental de la Megalópolis (CAME), a government body charged with environmental protection in the CDMX metropolitan area. Less than 24 hours after lifting the restrictions, soaring levels of ozone forced CAME to implement them again before lifting them again on 6 May, in a scenario becoming ever-more familiar to residents of Valle de México.
