REGION: The Caribbean makes its mark at Summit of the Americas

For many on the left, the decision of most Caribbean Community (Caricom) leaders to attend the 6-10 June Summit of the Americas (SoA) in Los Angeles was a betrayal of Caricom’s principles and another nail in the coffin of regional unity. On the other hand, Caricom leaders did make their point on the exclusion of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua from the Summit, either (like St Vincent & the Grenadines prime minister, Ralph Gonsalves) by not attending or from the podium – and they secured further US support over climate change through the new US-Caribbean Partnership to Address the Climate Crisis 2030 (PACC 2030). This would seem to be a reasonable achievement for the US’s small and vulnerable neighbours.
