In brief: Ecuador-China FTA will be signed this year, says minister

* Ecuador’s minister of production, foreign trade and investment, Julio José Prado, has said that he expects a free trade agreement (FTA) with China to be signed before the end of 2022. Prado’s remarks were made in a virtual address to the 15th China-Latin America-Caribbean Summit, currently being held in Beijing. Adding that Ecuador “is one of the most stable economies” in the region, he emphasised the government’s goals of “driving a profound and continuous transformation.” President Guillermo Lasso has outlined an FTA with China as one of the core goals of his presidency, but he is set to face stiff opposition in congress and from domestic manufacturing industries, which fear that they will be unable to compete with an influx of cheap Chinese goods.
