CHILE: Last-ditch effort to save constitution

Reading the runes, Chile’s ruling left-wing coalition is offering to make significant changes to the draft constitution produced by the constitutional convention (CC). Electoral surveys consistently show that voters are likely to select the ‘reject’ option in a referendum on the draft constitution on 4 September. President Gabriel Boric and his governing alliance are hoping that by offering to amend the more contentious aspects of the constitution it will be possible to persuade voters to ‘approve’ it in the upcoming referendum.
