BOLIVIA: Coca showdown in La Paz

Over the past three weeks, violent clashes between rival factions of one of Bolivia’s two main coca unions have again highlighted efforts by the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government to extend its control over the coca sector. The ‘official’ faction of the La Paz-based Asociación Departamental de Productores de Coca de los Yungas de La Paz (Adepcoca) is demanding the closure of a ‘parallel’ Adepcoca market, run by the government loyalist Arnold Alanes. President Luis Arce’s administration has been accused of fomenting the unrest by enabling Alanes’ faction to operate the parallel market.
