The corruption clouds around Vice President Cristina Fernández continue to gather. A public prosecutor this week formally requested a 12-year prison sentence for Fernández and a lifetime ban on her holding office. She has a storm-proof umbrella in the form of political immunity from prosecution while she remains in office until December 2023 as there will be insufficient support in congress to impeach her. Fernández once again portrayed herself as the victim of political persecution, impugning the integrity of the judiciary, which she said was being manipulated by her predecessor Mauricio Macri (2015-2019).
