In brief: Argentina boosts bilateral ties with India

*Argentina’s government has initiated bilateral talks with India to forge closer economic and political ties. Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández and Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero received the foreign minister of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, at the presidential palace Casa Rosada on 25 August where they discussed the progress of the bilateral agenda between the two countries. In a press conference following the meeting, Cafiero said they had discussed the possibility of Argentina joining the BRICS group of developing countries which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, “to strengthen an agenda of the global south that is not decided by the polarities the world is currently experiencing”. Cafiero also stated that India is Argentina’s fourth largest trading partner, with trade between the two countries generating US$6bn in 2021. Jaishankar noted that India was one of the largest exporters of defence equipment in the world, stating that “we would like to see how this can factor into our cooperation with Argentina.
