* Mexico and the US have announced the successful resolution of a labour rights review which had been requested under the Rapid Response Labour Mechanism (RRM) in the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on regional trade. The case relates to a Manufacturas Vu auto parts factory in Mexico’s Piedras Negras municipality, Coahuila state and marks the fifth successful resolution of a labour complaint filed under the RRM. The US had filed the complaint in July 2022, asking the Mexican government to review whether workers at the plant were being denied the rights of free association and collective bargaining. This was in response to a petition filed by two Mexican labour organisations. According to a press release by the US Trade Representative, the Mexican government conducted a review in response to the request and “took actions as a result”, which included a supervised union representation election, in which workers voted to elect independent union, La Liga Sindical Obrera Mexicana (LSOM), which will be the first union to represent workers at the facility for purposes of collective bargaining. US Secretary of Labour Marty Walsh said that Vu Manufacturas workers were now consulting with the union “as they prepare for negotiations for their first collective bargaining agreement”.
