Railway rates cap unlikely to reduce food inflation

Mexico’s federal transport ministry (SCT) announced on 10 August that it would cap the rates charged by railway companies in an effort to curb the increase in inflation, particularly of basic foodstuffs that are distributed by train, such as corn and wheat. The government said the measure would reduce costs by setting maximum fees for users – rather than giving companies free rein over rates - in order to prevent them from passing those costs on to consumers, but doubts remain as to its efficacy.
