Lithium alliance taking shape

Bolivia’s Foreign Minister Rogelio Mayta met with his Mexican counterpart Marcelo Ebrard on 5 August, with the two countries agreeing that their state-owned lithium companies will work together both in promoting the sale of lithium as a primary product and in the development of industrial-scale lithium processing capacity. The agreement is to apply to the entire value chain, up to and including the manufacturing of batteries and electric vehicles. Cooperation will be welcomed by Bolivia, which is yet to develop any industrial-scale projects for producing lithium compounds. Argentina is also emerging as a partner in Bolivia’s quest to add value to its raw lithium reserves, although the biggest challenge is likely to be sourcing the technology and rare minerals needed to produce lithium batteries at scale.
