In brief: Mexico’s gov’t to maintain prices of basic goods

*Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has announced that his government has reached an agreement with producers and distributors to maintain the prices of basic products and food items in order to combat the impact of inflation. In a daily press conference, he added that on 3 October his government will present a plan to reinforce the package against inflation and high prices (Pacic), first presented in May. The plan defines the prices of a basket of 24 basic products – which López Obrador stated would be expanded if possible. The president said there would also be “a considerable increase in minimum wage” and reiterated that the federal government would not increase fuel or electricity prices. Figures released by Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) on 23 September revealed that annual inflation reached 8.76% in the first half of September.
