In brief: Unemployment drops year-on-year in Mexico

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released its latest national employment survey (Enoe) which shows that the unemployment rate in August 2022 stood at 3.5% of the economically active population – people over the age of 15 who are employed or seeking employment – equating to 2.1m people. This represents a year-on-year decrease of 407,000 unemployed people and a decrease of 0.8 percentage points in the unemployment rate. In monthly terms, the unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points. The Enoe also shows that Mexico’s economically active population in August 2022 numbered 57.6m – 2m more than in August 2021. According to Inegi, 4.5m people, or 7.9% of the employed population, were underemployed in August 2022, meaning they had the capacity and need to work more hours. This represents a decrease of 2.7m people as compared to August 2021.
