In brief: New officials appointed to Mexico’s economy ministry

* Mexico’s newly appointed economy minister, Raquel Buenrostro Sánchez, has named Alejandro Encinas Nájera as the new deputy minister for foreign trade. Encinas, who has served as a labour minister official since 2018, replaces Luz María de la Mora who resigned on 13 October, a week after economy minister Tatiana Clouthier announced her surprise resignation. Both De la Mora and Clouthier had been key negotiators in ongoing talks with the US and Canada to resolve dispute settlement consultations filed in July under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) in relation to Mexico’s energy policy. Their departures have caused much uncertainty for the negotiations. However, in a statement, the economy ministry said the new team would “strengthen dialogue” within the government which it said was “fundamental and indispensable for the coordinated elaboration of the responses to the USMCA consultations”.  Buenrostro also announced the appointment of Luis Abel Romero López as the deputy minister for industry and commerce, replacing Héctor Guerrero. Romero most recently served as the general administrator of Mexico’s tax authority (SAT), which Buenrostro had headed up since January 2020 before taking on the economy ministry role.
