Blinken visits Peru, attends OAS meeting

Peru/Region: On 5 October, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken attended the 52nd regular session of the General Assembly of the Organisation of American States (OAS) in Lima, Peru. His attendance at the event marks the end of a Latin American tour by Blinken which he began on 3 October in Colombia, where he met President Gustavo Petro, also taking in Chile, where he met President Gabriel Boric. As well as attending the OAS General Assembly, he also co-led a migration ministerial on the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection, which was announced at the June 2022 Summit of the Americas in the US, addressing irregular migration with regional partners. The US and Peru reaffirmed their long-held commitment to finding sustainable solutions to irregular migration in assistance to support response efforts in Peru. As well as meeting OAS Sectary General Luis Almagro, Blinken also held talks with Peru’s President Pedro Castillo and Peru’s Foreign Minister César Landa to discuss “increasing regional security, strengthening democratic governance, protecting the environment, and promoting inclusive economic development”. Another key area for discussion was the rise of illegal and unregulated fishing in Peru.
