Sergio Cusicanqui has said that the country’s GDP grew 4.13% in the second quarter of 2022 year-on-year. This is above the 3.97% registered in the first quarter. However, he said that this was short of the 4.5% GDP growth rate required to activate the payment of a second annual pay bonus (‘aguinaldo’) at the end of the year. The latest GDP forecast released yesterday (19 October) by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America & the Caribbean (Eclac) is projecting that Bolivia’s GDP will grow 3.5% in 2022, slowing to 3.0% in 2023 – above the 3.4% and 1.2% average that it forecasts for South America. Bolivia’s GDP grew 6.1% in 2021 on World Bank (WB) figures, after contracting 8.7% in 2020 due to the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
