BRAZIL: No winner in debate, but Bolsonaro endures tough week

Most of the domestic press agreed that there was no clear winner in the first debate ahead of the second round of the country’s presidential election, which was watched by millions of Brazilians on 16 October. President Jair Bolsonaro of the Partido Liberal (PL), who is bidding for re-election on 30 October, and his rival, leftist former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2011) of the left-wing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) exchanged insults, focusing more on each other’s past mistakes than on their plans for a future government.
