BRAZIL: A holy war

Officially, Brazil has been a secular state since 1890. In practice, religion and politics never ceased to be intertwined in the country, long the largest Catholic community in the world and now home to a fast-growing population of evangelical Christians. But the 2022 presidential campaign has seen the issue of religion take on a new importance and dominate political discussions, to the detriment of any other kind of debate, while also leading to an increase in religious intolerance.
