In brief: Uruguay’s Lacalle Pou seeks to boost trade with Japan

* Uruguay’s president, Luis Lacalle Pou, has travelled to Tokyo to attend the Japan-Uruguay Business Forum, hosted by the Japan External Trade Organization, a Japan government-related organisation, with the goal of fostering bilateral trade. Speaking at the event, the president, stressed that Uruguay has “much to offer,” especially in the country’s capacity to assure food security with its trade partners. He was accompanied by a delegation which included ministers of foreign relations Francisco Bustillo and economy & finance, Azucena Arbeleche, among others, as well as members of Uruguay’s business sector. He said that the government was seeking to open its markets – something it would prefer to do together with Brazil and Argentina. However, he said that if this doesn’t work within the framework of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) trade bloc, formed by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, the country is prepared to establish trade agreements with other countries. President Lacalle Pou also said that in November Uruguay would present its membership application to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), to which Japan belongs, thereby “adding another level to relations.” The CPTPP members are Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, New Zealand, Singapore, and Vietnam.
